Films: Top 5 For September
Here at Urban Male we love our films so we present to you our top 5 cinema releases for this month. We’ve taken the dark gritty path by entering the world of the Thriller as all of the titles chosen match the grey, moody tones of September with themes of crime, drama, and action. We’re pretty sure if you catch at least one of these films then you’ll have gotten your moneys worth this month.
A Most Wanted Man – Based on the bestselling novel from John Le Carre (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy) and starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, a Most Wanted Man tells the story of a mysterious man who arrives in Hamburg seeking out help from the cities Islamic community, but it isn’t long before he gets the attention of British, German and American security services who are keen to find out his true identity. The thriller also stars Willem Dafoe, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright and was released 5th September.
The Rover – Directed by David Michod this film has a setting 10 years after a complete global economic collapse, where law and order have all but disintegrated. In the Australian outback lives a hardened bitter man Eric played by Guy Pearce, whose only valuable possession (his car) is stolen. During the theft a young man (Robert Pattinson) is left behind and taken captive. Eric then forces him to track down the thief (his brother) and reclaim his car at all costs. This looks like an intense mix of action and emotion. Well worth a watch we think. This film came out on August 15th so you’ll have to catch it quick.
A Walk Among the Tombstones – The latest in Liam Neesons action films sees Matt Scudder (Neeson) as an ex NYPD cop, turned private investigator (not averse to breaking the law) who is hired by a heroin dealer to track down the men responsible for murdering his wife. As he delves deeper into the mystery he soon discovers that something much larger is at play and sets out to stop it (presumably) Taken style. Developed from the bestselling mystery novels by author Laurence Block, and directed by Scott Frank, we’re potentially seeing the first in a series of films based on Scudder’s 18 novel appearances. Go to see this if you like watching Liam Neeson killing people. It is released September 19th.
The Equalizer – Directed by Antoine Fuqua and based on the television series of the same name, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is ex special ops, working in a DIY store by day and fighting criminal injustice by night. When he happens upon a young prostitute who is attacked and (discovering the Russian mob are behind it) he sets out to bring them down…Denzel style. Co starring Chloe Grace Moretz (kick Ass), and Marton Csokas you should expect some dazzling violence and satisfying justice if this face is anything to go by. Go see it on September 26th.
The Guest – The final film this month is probably the one we’re most excited about; Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) plays an ex soldier who pays a visit to the family of a dead comrade who take him in as a guest. The trailer suggests though, there is a lot more than meets the eye. We’re thinking lots of violence and gore in this action/thriller with the promise of a juicy plot twist. The Guest is directed by Adam Wingard and was released September 5th.
