Now February is the shortest month but it’s looking great for movie releases this year that you really don’t want to miss. You’ve probably gotten over the financial woes of Christmas and a more inclined to part with a small fortune on cinema tickets (maybe even pic ‘n’ mix) and there definitely are some titles worthy of seeing in the cinema. There’s a bit of Sci-Fi to get your teeth into this month as well as a more ‘singular’ taste just in time for Valentine’s Day. These are our top films for February.

Jupiter Ascending – Out Now

We’re always a bit dubious of new Sci-Fi/Fantasy escapades as they never seem to really ‘take off’ even if the film is considered good quality (it all comes down to Box Office ratings unfortunately) and what with them usually having a big budget, the prospect of any sequels is usually quite slim unless they rake it all back at the Box Office. Having said that…THIS LOOKS AWESOME! Not so sure about Channing Tatum’s dodgy makeup but the scale of the film looks huge and the mass saturation of CGI looks seamlessly well done. Could this be the next…no we won’t say it. The duo that brought us The Matrix trilogy and Cloud Atlas, the Wachowskis, give us their next visionary masterpiece that will surely overload the minds of children and adults too. A great way to start the year…and what a year it will be.

Inherent Vice – Out Now

Featuring a cast of very enjoyable and talented actors, Inherent Vice looks like a thrilling tangle of plot and well written characters to match even the likes of the Coen Brothers films. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as “Doc”, a California dwelling, weed smoking private detective, alongside Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro and Reese Witherspoon. This may not be to everyone’s taste but it does look like it has it’s heart set on becoming a cult classic, and the trailer had us grinning from ear to ear so we hope the film itself delivers. Apparently the story is a little hard to follow, but that doesn’t put us off.

Project Almanac – February 20th

Now this looks rather interesting. If any of you have seen and liked the 2012 film Chronicle, about a group of students who develop powers, then you’ll probably want to catch this one as they look very similar in concept and style. This sort of film is forgiven for the (probably) breezed over plot details about how a group of teenagers can build, let alone how anyone can build, a time machine, as it’s the juicy ‘what would you do?’ that is the real lure here. Then of course there are the inevitable consequences of messing with nature itself, such as the paradox’s, the ripple effect (or butterfly, whichever you prefer) and the idea that some things cannot be changed. In short this looks like lots of fun.

Fifty Shades Of Grey – February 13th

There was no way this film could escape our Top 4 list this month. The worldwide phenomenon that has stolen hours of precious time with our loved ones makes it’s hotly anticipated cinematic debut. For those that have not read the books you cannot deny the curiosity that claws at you from every readers smirk that makes you wonder how raunchy it really is. The story is told from the perspective of Anastasia Steele, a mousy college senior who takes her friends place to interview one of the most successful men in Seattle…Christian Grey; kinky sex ensues.
